ABOUT
THE PROGRAM
The
Communication Disorders Program at Eastern Kentucky University offers a
Master of Arts in Education. The M.A. Ed. in Communication
Disorders is a 63 hour degree program. In addition to academic coursework,
students must complete 400 clock hours of supervised practicum prior to exiting
from the graduate program. At least 375 of these 400 hours must be in
direct patient/client contact and 25 in clinical observation. This requirement meets the number of hours
specified for national certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA)
and will meet or exceed the hours required for Kentucky Teacher Certification
in Communication Disorders and for Kentucky Licensure in Speech-Language
Pathology. Students in the Communication Disorders graduate program
must purchase the college student professional liability insurance prior
to enrollment in clinical practicum courses.

The PRAXIS (or ASHA) exam pass rates have been above 90% for the past three years: 100% (15) for 2007 graduates, 92% (12/13) for 2006 graduates, and 94% (17/18) for 2005 graduates. PREREQUISITES
Students
who have received an undergraduate degree in the major from another university
and who are admitted into EKU's Communication Disorders Graduate Program,
will need to meet pre-professional prerequisites. This preparation
is considered to be the minimum foundation for advanced training in this
field at the graduate level of study. Students must have a minimum
grade of "C" in all prerequisite courses.
Some
undergraduate courses are prerequisite to certain graduate courses and
must be completed prior to enrollment in advanced study at the graduate
level. (See Undergraduate Catalog for course descriptions or
CDS
Courses website.) Other prerequisites may be taken concurrently
with graduate courses. Students should consult the Program's Graduate
Advisor to determine the status of prerequisite fulfillment. The
student will need to provide a course syllabus and catalog description
for any prerequisite in question. The student may be requested to
confer with the course instructor for a final decision. If prior
completion of a prerequisite cannot be documented, the student must enroll
in the course. If a prerequisite has been partially completed, the
student may be required to audit lectures on specific topics; complete
any project(s) as part of the typical course requirements; test out of
the course; or prepare a portfolio to document completion of the prerequisite
content.
