ACADEMIC
DISHONESTY, PLAGIARISM, AND CHEATING
The faculty of
the Communication Disorders Program wants all students to be the best in
whatever they do, to be independent thinkers and problem solvers, and to be
trustworthy and responsible professionals. Developing one's own knowledge
base will get you there; "borrowing" from someone else will not!
The faculty of
the Communication Disorders Program believes that acquisition of knowledge and
ethical behavior are equally important aspects in the student's academic
development to become a professional in this field. Giving attention to
both of these aspects is in the best interest of the student and in the best
interest of the public to be served by that student upon graduation.
Therefore, the
faculty of the Communication Disorders Program supports the University's policy
on Academic Honesty in the University Handbook for Students. The
Program also supports the concept of "co-responsibility" for anyone
who knowingly assists in any form of academic dishonesty. The CD faculty
will follow University procedures in the Handbook to impose sanctions for
any student who participates in any form of academic dishonesty. Unethical
behavior will not be tolerated by the Program or by the University.

ATTENDANCE
POLICY FOR COMMUNICATION DISORDERS
Effective as of Fall Semester 1997
College
of Education Attendance Policy: Absences equating to 20% of
class meetings will resulting automatic failure. Class sessions missed as
a result of late entry into the class will be counted as absences. The
student is responsible for presenting the instructor with a reason for absences
in order to be given opportunity to make up missed work. Adequate reasons
for class absences include personal illness, death or serious illness in the
immediate family, or participation in an approved University activity.
Communication
Disorders Program Attendance Policy: The following is a uniform
attendance policy for the Communication Disorders (CD) Program and will be
enforced by all CD faculty. To determine if the reason for an absence is
adequate, as specified in the College of Education policy, the student may be
required to provide documentation (e.g., medical excuse) before the absence is
approved.
1. Regular
attendance is expected throughout the semester and will be recorded each class
period.
2. The
student should call the Department secretary (606-622-4442) and leave a message
for the instructor prior to the class absence. Include in this
message your name and the course number and reason for the absence. It is
not necessary to call the instructor directly.
3. A maximum
of 3 approved absences will be allowed for DAY CLASSES. Subsequent
absences may result in the lowering of the final grade (e.g., 4 = one grade
lower, 5 = two grades lower, 6 = three grades lower, 7 = failure).
4. For EVENING CLASSES
and CLINICAL PRACTICUM CLASSES, 1 approved absence will be allowed; 2 absences
may result in 2 letter grades lower; 3 absences may result in course failure.
5. Any
absence prior to an examination requires 24 hours notice. If less than a
24 hour notice is given, the instructor may require documentation to determine
if the absence will be approved and if a makeup will be permitted.
6. Students will be
responsible for obtaining class notes and handouts from other students in the
class in the event of any absence.

PROFESSIONALISM
As you know, our profession has
established fairly clear standards for professionalism. These standards
are embedded in ASHA's Code of Ethics. The faculty of the EKU
Communication Disorders Program feel strongly about professionalism and the Code
of Ethics and have established a set of behavioral/professional standards and
associated system for applying these standards. The standards are based on
the Code as well as quality standards we must meet for continuing program
accreditation by ASHA's Council on Academic Affairs and Professional Standards
Board accreditation of our Clinic. You will be (or already have) reviewing
and signing a copy of these standards indicating that you are knowledgeable
about and agree to abide by these standards in all courses and clinical
experiences that are a part of your program of study. Please know that,
depending on the magnitude, it is possible for a serious infraction to result in
a failing grade in this course. Thank you, in advance for your attention
to these standards.
