GENERAL INFORMATION:
WORKING WITH  THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CHILD

WHAT IS A TEACHER OF THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CHILD

A teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing child is a professional trained to work with both normal hearing children and children with varying degrees of hearing impairment.  In Kentucky, the only state university where you can get this kind of training is at Eastern Kentucky University.  The training program helps to develop skills which will allow you to work with the deaf and the hard of hearing as well as normal hearing children.  As a teacher, your responsibilities include teaching all academic subjects to your students so that they can become valuable members of society.

WHERE DOES A TEACHER OF THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING WORK

You may decide that you want to teach profoundly deaf & hard of hearing children and that you prefer working at an institution such as the Kentucky School of the Deaf.  You may decide that you want to work with very special deaf & hard of hearing children who can succeed using oral speech and work at the Lexington Hearing & Speech Center or the Louisville Deaf Oral School.  You may want to stay in your home district in Kentucky, and there are many classrooms for the deaf & hard of hearing in local school districts in Kentucky.  You may want to work as a teacher in another state or another country; we have graduates who are now working in Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, and many other states; we also have graduates in Germany and the Philippines.
