Deaf and Hard of Hearing Certification

The prerequisites are an undergraduate degree and KY Provisional Teaching Certificate in P-5, 5-9, or High School for classroom teachers. Also, candidates must have completed the following or equivalent prerequisite course work.

Prerequisite Courses ------------------------------------------ 12 Hours

ELE 445 Foundations of Reading/Language Arts
EMG 447 or 806 Reading/Language Arts in the Middle Grades
MAT 201 Mathematical Concepts for Middle and Elementary School Teachers I
MAT 202 Mathematical Concepts for Middle and Elementary School Teachers II

Required Courses ---------------------------------------------- 37 hours

SED 775 Nature and Needs of Exceptional Students
ASL 101 American Sign Language I
SED 338 Language of the Deaf and Heard of Hearing
SED 380  
SED 745 Program and Personnel Management
SED 710 Assessment, Curriculum and Methods in Content Areas for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
SED 718 Survey of Special Education in Early Childhood
SED 722 Language Disorders of Students with Disabilities
SED 774* Field Experiences with Exceptional Learners
SED 781 Speech for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
SED 830 Survey of Education for the Hearing Impaired
SED 897 Practicum in Special Education

Note: Completion of the above program will not suffice for completion of Rank program. For DHH Certification, the PRAXIS test in the area of a specialty must be passed

*SED 774 can be waived with one year of successful teaching of candidates with DHH
