RANK I (SIXTH YEAR) PROGRAM
30 Semester Hours Minimum
The Rank I requires a minimum
of 60 hours if a master's program is included or a minimum of 30 additional
hours after completion of a planned Rank II program.
Admission
To be eligible for admission into any special education
non-degree program, a student must have the following:

Minimum undergraduate GPA or
2.5 overall or in the last 60 hours of course work.
Applicants for certification as Director
of Special Education must have the following in addition:

Master's degree or planned fifth-year
program

Valid Kentucky certificate for
teachers of exceptional children (including speech-language pathologist)
or for school psychologist.

Three years experience (full-time)
as a teacher of exceptional children, speech-language pathologist, or school
psychologist.
Certification Programs
Candidates pursuing special education certification or secondary
endorsement in Learning and Behavior Disorders,
Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education,
Moderate and Severe Disabilities and Deaf
and Hard of Hearing must hold at least provisional certification in
a teaching field. The certification options range from 37 to 52
semester hours. Rank II is earned at 32 hours while the certification
is awarded at the completion of the entire program. Additional hours
may apply toward a sixth year program (Rank I).

important that candidates seek early advisement from the department.
